We are excited about the New Year and as many of you may know, there are several traditions in the Hispanic culture, one of them is to welcome the year with new ideas, new goals and of course a new look. Welcome 2009 by setting new goals to create a look you’ve always wanted.

If you’re tired of your long locks and want to be perceived in a different way, don’t make drastic changes; keep in mind that changes have consequences. If you have really long hair I recommend a medium length cut that falls right below the shoulders.

For those with short hair that want long hair this new year, you can lengthen your hair with extensions. There are different types of extensions. You can use the extensions that remain in your hair long term and are applied by your stylist although I recommend having these no more than two to three months. Another option is to use temporary extensions with clips that are applied for a day and can be done in the comfort of your own home and are much less expensive.

When choosing a new hair color, don’t go from a very light tone to a very dark tone. I recommend choosing a shade NO MORE THAN two shades darker than the one you currently have. If you want to become a blonde bombshell keep the color of your skin, eyes and personality in mind. It’s best to use a color product with a shade selection guide on the box to help you find a shade that works for you.

Through experience I’ve learned that if you dye your hair to a lighter shade than your natural color, and you don’t like it, it can be corrected by dying your hair darker again. If you are afraid of changing colors drastically, an easy alternative is to start with highlights. You can become a sexy blonde or alternatively, if you would like to darken your hair, you can use low lights to become a brunette beauty for the new year.

Don’t forget to prepare your hair and scalp for all of these changes. Before and after coloring, use a good treatment for the hair and scalp like Head & Shoulders advanced shampoos and conditioners.
